This outstanding example of Majolica is one of a kind, depicting “Jumbo the Circus Elephant” who lived from 1860 to 1885. Jumbo was an African bush elephant, born in Sudan and his first “job” was with the Paris zoo, then he went to the London zoo from 1865-1882. P.T. Barnum purchased him in 1882 and brought him to America to be part of “The Greatest Show on Earth”. Sadly, Jumbo only lived for three years in the US, dying in a rail yard accident in Canada after a performance. The whole world was enthralled with “Jumbo” and this wonderful and rare Majolica figurine is a nice tribute to this giant!
