Set of five hand forged, English copper “Haystack” measures, so named because they resembled the shape of harvested hay in rural 19th England. This attractive copper set consists of: 1Quart, 2Quart, 1Gallon, 2Gallon and the largest, 4Gallon. These wonderful examples were hand forged of quality copper and have dovetailed brass seams for stability. The Haystack pieces were mainly used to measure ale and spirits in pubs, but were also used by cooks in castles and large manor homes in the 1800’s. Periodically officials would verify the size of the measures in pubs and stamp the rim with a lead tariff marker with the initials of the reigning monarch…and collect the tariffs! This stunning mid 1800’s set would warm up any decor and look especially appealing in a bar area.
